Below are steps on how to make a batch file on any computer running a Microsoft operating system (e.g., MS-DOS or any version of Windows).

Creating a batch file in Microsoft Windows

A short tutorial on how to easily use batch files in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This method of codes is extremely useful and helpful and is very easy to do. You can create any number of batch files, each with its own purpose. To use the bat command: Create a text file that contains a list of console commands (one per line) Name it something like mybatchfile.txt; Place the file in your SkyrimData directory (You can organize them into sub-folders too) Start the game and bring up the console; Type.

In Windows, you can create a batch file using the steps below or the steps mentioned in the MS-DOS command line section. If you are more comfortable with Microsoft Windows, you can use any text editor (such as Notepad or WordPad) to create your batch files. As long as the file extension ends with .bat. In the example below, we use the Windows Notepad to create a batch file.

1. Click Start.
2. Type Notepad in the Run box and press Enter.
3. Once Notepad is open, type the following lines or copy and paste them.

4. Click File and then Save, and then navigate to where you want to save the file. For the file name, type test.bat and if your version of Windows has a Save as type option, choose All files, otherwise it saves as a text file. Once you have completed these steps, click the Save button and exit notepad.
5. To run the batch file, double-click it like any other program. Once the batch file has completed running, it closes automatically.

Creating a batch file in MS-DOS

To create a batch file in MS-DOS or the Windows command line, follow the steps below.

New versions of Windows or computers running a 64-bit version of Windows no longer support the edit command, which means these steps no longer work. Use the above steps if you are running the latest version of Windows.

1. Open the Windows command line.
2. In the MS-DOS prompt, type: edit test.bat and press Enter.
3. If typed correctly, a blue edit screen should appear. In the edit screen, type:

4. Once these three lines are entered, click File and choose exit; when prompted to save, click Yes. Users who do not have a mouse can accomplish this same task by pressing Alt+F to access the file menu, and then X to exit. Press Enter to save changes.
5. Once you are back at the MS-DOS prompt, type: test and press Enter to execute the test.bat file. Because the first line is a pause, you will first be prompted to press a key. Upon doing so, the batch file runs line-by-line; in this case, listing the files in the Windows and Windowssystem directories.

Tip

If you want to add more lines to this batch file, type edit test.bat to open the file for editing.

Additional information about the MS-DOS edit command is on our edit command page. Some versions of MS-DOS and bootable diskettes may not have the edit command. If this the case, you would either need to obtain the edit.com file or use the copy con command.

Aliases means creating shortcuts or keywords for existing commands. Suppose if we wanted to execute the below command which is nothing but the directory listing command with the /w option to not show all of the necessary details in a directory listing.

Suppose if we were to create a shortcut to this command as follows.

When we want to execute the dir /w command, we can simply type in the word dw. The word ‘dw’ has now become an alias to the command Dir /w.

Creating an Alias

Alias are managed by using the doskey command.

Example

Create a new file called keys.bat and enter the following commands in the file. The below commands creates two aliases, one if for the cd command, which automatically goes to the directory called test. And the other is for the dir command.

Once you execute the command, you will able to run these aliases in the command prompt.

The following screenshot shows that after the above created batch file is executed, you can freely enter the ‘d’ command and it will give you the directory listing which means that your alias has been created.

Deleting an Alias

An alias or macro can be deleted by setting the value of the macro to NULL.

Example

In the above example, we are first setting the macro d to d = dir. After which we are setting it to NULL. Because we have set the value of d to NULL, the macro d will deleted.
